Halloween Special

Sharks feeding on human appendages, brain-eating ghosts and skeleton astronauts. That's just a small sampling of the subject matter of illustration machine Ghostshrimp. Spoooooookyyyy...

Stamp of the Day

Not to stereotype an entire nation, but...

Is every Brazilian an insanely talented illustrator? Just wondering. Anyway, take a look at another product of their creatively gifted gene pool. Introducing Matheus Lopes.

Preface to Prologue

As you know by now, I have an almost unhealthy obsession with opening film credits. I've posted a number of collections on several occasions, but today I'm introducing my lovely audience to a collective that actually designs them. And not just any, but the really, really good ones. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the aptly named Prologue.

Preferential treatment...Not that she needs it.

Brooklyn photographer Meg Wachter (famous for her "dumped" series) has a plethora of great shots on her site, and it doesn't hurt that she's a fellow OU Alum. In fact, it seems lately that it's pretty much a prerequisite to be featured on The Best Part (see Jenny Holzer last week, Maya Lin, etc., etc.) Don't let this detract from Meg's work, though, her amazing photos would be featured even if she were a Miami of Ohio grad (gasp!).

Our Joy is Great Work

That's a quote I love from California (S.F. + L.A.) studio Polychrome describing their approach. Their portfolio is full of diverse projects, all of which are great solutions, so I guess they have reason to be pretty joyful.

Stumbling Into Genius

I stumbled upon the work of Edward Bawden while researching artists who will be part of the London Transport Museum's upcoming show "The Art of the Poster: A Century of Design". His work includes everything from large-scale murals to posters, his paintings are part of the Tate's permanent collection and he even taught Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art. So you could say he's a decent artist...I'll definitely be looking further into his work. For now enjoy a few of my favorites:

Viva La Liberation!

The folks at Print Liberation have been doing some great work for quite some time, I love the ultra-simple, almost matter-of-fact style of their type and tongue-in-cheek humor that seems to accompany everything they do.

Stamp of the Day

Some great work, and my quick economy fix:

Aussie illustrator (via Columbia) Marcela Restrepo has some fantastic work on her site, it reminds me a bit of Tim Marrs' linework and brush textures, only simplified a little. But I digress, check out her work and buy some prints in her shop...Feed the economy, people!

Sometimes we Forget Politicians are People...

A quote from "The Digital Journalist" on photographer Callie Shell's incredible backstage coverage of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign:

Four years ago Time photographer Callie Shell met Barack Obama backstage when she was covering presidential candidate John Kerry. She sent her editor more photographs of Obama than Kerry. When asked why, she said, "I do not know, I just have a feeling about him. I think he will be important down the road." Her first photo essay on Obama was two and a half years ago. She has stuck with him ever since.

Check out the phenomenal results of her ongoing documentation here.

California's National Forest

I'm loving the work of Glendale designers National Forest, and apparently so is everyone else. With clients like Element, Urban Outfitters and Swindle Magazine they're not hurting for amazing work. Check out their site here, and get your drool bibs ready.

Stamp of the Day

Signs, Signs, Everywhere There's Signs...

As you may or may not know, I'm a fan of all things old or abandoned, especially when it comes to signage. You'll understand my excitement then, when I discovered the work of photographer Charles Blackburn and his Flickr site. He has a number of sets dedicated to antique signage, abandoned buildings and other such beautiful subjects, all for my viewing pleasure.

Top 50 Obama Posters

I'd forgotten how many great posters had been created to promote the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. That is, until I found this list of the 50 best Obama posters. Enjoy!

Hail César!

Whether you realize it or not, you've seen the art of illustrator César Moreno. He's done work for many of the big names, including Nike and Rolling Stone Magazine, and for good reason, his work is phenomenal. I could spend all day staring at the details of the many pieces displayed on his site. A few of my favorites:

What's Good for the Goose...

Graphic designer Lily Piyathaisere has some nice work on her site, I especially like the experimental typeface she designed based on goose feathers, check it out here.

Who Would You Be?

Whilst talking around the water cooler (aka: whilst sitting at our desks) with some co-workers yesterday, I posed the rhetorical question: "If you could be any current designer or artist, who would you be?" My rhetorical answer: Jay Ryan of The Bird Machine. The reason for this choice:
