Coney Island's Wonderful Weirdness
On my recent visit to NYC, I was reminded of the amazing handmade vernacular that is prevalent throughout what is this modern city, especially in places like the quickly-disappearing Coney Island. From reclaimed materials to hand-painted signs to graffiti and well-worn, antique textures, Coney Island is a treasure-trove of handmade design from times past. While it may have seen better days, and may even cease to exist in the near future, there are thankfully a number of photographers, both amateur and professional, documenting the weirdness that is Coney Island. Love Letters
Love Letter is a project by Stephen Powers with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, a fantastic initiative that creates wall murals facing the Market elevated train line in order to beautify the neighborhood and provide job training to local youth. We need so much more hand painted signage in every city. Via Kitsune Noir.

Artist/designer/illustrator/cartoonist Andy Rementer has a great, simplistic, humorous style. I especially love his lettering/type design.
Poster of the Day
For this week's Poster of the Day series, I'll be featuring the work of illustration/postermaking phenom Daniel Danger. He brings a bit of a realistic illustrative style to his posters, sometimes almost Tomer Hanuka-like in nature. He also utilizes some nice handmade type to really set his work apart from the crowd. Linzie Hunter
London (by way of Scotland) illustrator Linzie Hunter is the proud creator of a plethora of great work (you may be familiar with her spam one-liner posters), but I'm particularly fond of her fun illustrative lettering (I can hear Vignelli scoffing now).

Illustrator Elizabeth Garvey has a great "ode-to-the-outsider" style, I especially love her hand-drawn type.

Welcome to the land of OZ
I love the simple, fun style of Italian illustrator Olimpia Zagnoli. Great use of line and color, and her hand-drawn type is amazing as well.
