It's a strange day here at The Best Part

I don't know what it is, but today I just seem to be finding some very cool, yet very strange and different content for the TBP blog.

Not that I'm complaining.

It all starts here, with the work of Samurai, Inc. (a.k.a. Kashiwa Sato). In what promises to be one of my favorite finds of all time, Sato has done some incredible, category-defying work ranging from graphics to packaging to environmental design, and about forty thousand examples are detailed on his site. Take some time to enjoy the full breadth of his work, you won't be disappointed.

Stocking-stuffers for your relatives in prison

Johan Forsberg creates products using concrete as a primary medium, with many unique applications. From concrete clocks to wall hangings to tables, he makes them all, and with a nice minimal twist.

Lighting Wizardry

Dylan Kehde Roelofs is a glassblowing genius, creating mind-blowing incandescent light bulbs and lamp sculptures that look like something from a Harry Potter acid flashback.

Mission Accomplished

Garry Milne creates artwork that, in his words, "projects the negative, sometimes ugly aspects of life as something that can be viewed as beautiful and appealing".

WARNING: PRODUCTIVITY SAPPING LINK

Pictures of Walls is a site devoted to...well...pictures of walls. But these walls have been "defaced" by some unknown passerby to create statements that range from political insights to plain old lewdness. You won't see any Banksy or Shepard Fairey here, only simple writings from the everyday vandal who needs to get something out of their system. There's something beautiful about the fact that these writers are obviously not doing this for publicity, just pure self-expression. But I warn you, once you journey into the vortex that is this site, something compels you to keep clicking....just....one....more....time...

Art meets Statistics...and makes babies

People have been finding some very interesting ways to present world statistics lately (see Toby Ng post below). In this case, aptly titled "Of All the People in the World", individual grains of rice are used to represent one person, in situations that range from "People Who Have Walked on the Moon" to "Irish People Who Emigrated to the USA Between 1846 and 1855". Fascinating numbers presented in an unusual, yet genius way.

This post has nothing to do with Dita von Teese

Burlesque of North America is an art & design collective with a studio based in Minneapolis. Handling everything from illustration to clothing to screen-printed posters for clients like Upper Playground, Kid Robot and Flip Skateboards, you could say their work is a little bit amazing.

p.s...After posting this, I was made aware that the Melvins and Peeping Tom posters are by Seldon Hunt and the Blood Ocean poster is by Poohki.

Bringing the War Home

Artist Martha Rosler has been making art in one form or another for over 40 years. It is fitting then, that with the current political landscape, she return to the type of work she was doing during the Vietnam era. Her highly political collage tackles issues from feminism to war, check out the interview and slideshow via the NYT here.

Taking it Personally

Markus Schäfer of Buero Ink has some nice corporate design work on his site, but what I'm more impressed with is his "personal work" section. Like many of us who deal with corporate clients on a day-to-day basis, he uses his spare time to create the work he really wants to.

If you don't know...now you know.

I love beginning the day's posts with a good old Biggie Smalls quote.

I'm obviously a bit late to the party though, because I've found Ian Francis' work everywhere now that I've been enlightened to his existence. However, I'm ecstatic to have found his paintings, because he may be my new favorite artist. And maybe now yours too.

You don't want to be left out, do you??

Christophe Kutner takes amazing pictures, and lots of them. Go to his site NOW or forever be a little less inspired than the rest of us.

Intelligent Graphic Design Cubed

UK Design studio Cubic takes passion for minimal design to a whole new level. Even their website says "We are minimal and we are fucking serious" (without actually saying it). That said, I love their work and their restraint alike.

Polanco vs. Recife

Emmanuel Polanco's illustration has a certain Eduardo Recife thing going for it (or does Recife have a Polanco thing going for him?), and that's definitely a good thing. Fantastic use of collage and found materials to communicate conceptually.
