Summer of the Monkey

GORILLAZ members Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn have come together once again to create an AMAZING animation sequence based on the story Journey to the West, a legendary Chinese novel from the late 1500s, to build anticipation for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. In the new animated spot, says Hewlett, “the idea is that you tell the entire story of Journey to the West in a two-minute opening sequence, which is basically them on their way to the Olympic stadium…this is going to be the summer of Monkey.”

Stamp of the Day

This one demands a bit of background information, it was produced by East Germany in 1966 in support of North Vietnam.

Cheerio, Wankers!

I can be quite the rude bastard, lacking all social graces and niceties. So I'm just going to let photographer and all-around English gentleman Tim Sinclair introduce himself and experience my crass "behaviour" firsthand:

Hello. My name is Tim Sinclair and I'm a photographer in Manchester, England. I work mostly in Advertising but I'll shoot anything, anytime, anyplace. Have a look through my stuff and if you like it, get in touch and I'll pop 'round for a cup of tea.

Lovely.

It's a rough life

Damien Correll recently updated his site with some new work, and as usual, it doesn't disappoint. He has a wide variety of random stuff, and it looks like he's been having a lot of fun making it. But then, who wouldn't enjoy doing everything from illustrating a children's story about a depressed rainbow to designing skatedecks for Zoo York?

I'm lovin' it!

No, I'm not talking about processed animal parts slathered in processed cheese-food product, sandwiched between two pancake-like objects soaked in processed syrup-food product. Although that sounds delicious right now.

I'm talking about Kelly Packer's amazing colored pencil and oil pastel drawings, available in her Etsy shop. Made with actual human hands and available with or without real cheese!

Stamp of the Day

Who? What? How?

These drawings by Hope Gangloff are so simple, yet so complex. I'm just guessing, but they seem to be created with a basic pen/marker combination of media, with a dramatic result. I don't know quite how to explain it, but they seem to have a photographic quality. So, to sum it up, I'm mystified. In a good way.

Somewhere a librarian is screaming

Jennifer Khoshbin is doing what I wanted to do with my math books as a youngster, which is somehow make them interesting. Her "book projects" make intricate sculptures from ordinary books, some would say mutilating them in the process, but I prefer to think of it as giving them new life.

The tagline should be "Fresh off the wagon"

Oh, how I crack myself up.

That said, you may have seen this today on a number of other design blogs, but in case you haven't, check out the design for Prairie Vodka's promotional packaging. Not only is it beautiful and amazing, but fitting for the brand in so many ways. Genius!

And yes, it is exhausting dealing with my ego. Just ask my wife.

IT PUTS THE EMULSION ON THE SCREEN!

Illustrator/poster designer Tyler Stout packs so many details and colors into his prints, I can't imagine trying to screen print them. The authorities might want to check his basement for captives. Seriously.

Stamp of the Day

Keepin' it real....simple

London designer Hugh Morse has some nice work on his site, and I'm really loving the site itself. As portfolio sites go, this one is top notch. Simple, with easy navigation, it really showcases the work.

Yet another movie featuring Ice Cube

Jennilee Marigomen takes cool pictures. She then posts them to her blog, with accompanying music tracks for each photo. Each is something like a single-frame silent movie, with soundtracks ranging from N.W.A. to Sam Cooke. Go there the next time you're bored at work, or anytime you just want to drown out the voices of your co-workers....or the ones in your head.

Welcome to 1984

As seen on The Daily Heller, the Flip video camera is the size of a small cell phone and comes equipped with self-contained USB and the capability to upload directly to YouTube.

Footage from the Flip soon to be seen on TMZ and Perez Hilton.
Celebrities beware.

He will not design green eggs and ham!

Sam Dallyn has a portfolio full of nice, simple, colorful work for print, identity and web. I especially like the playing cards below; simplicity for easy reading and non-traditional colors are combined for a fun result.

Stamp of the Day

They just might make a wino out of me yet

I'm not much of a wine drinker, so I don't know the ramifications a can would have on its' taste, but I would be more likely to buy wine if it came in a cool can like these. Designed by Swedish designers Jens Andersson and Jonas Forsman, they have a hint of a wine bottle in their shape and a nice flat black finish.

Yeah, I don't understand any of this either

Alex Dragulescu is a Romanian visual artist whose projects are experiments and explorations of algorithms, computational models, simulations and information visualizations that involve data derived from databases, spam emails, blogs and video game assets.

Whatever that means. I couldn't tell you how it's made, but it's beautiful.

If Philip Johnson were a Hell's Angel

Pentagram's newest completed project, the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee is (like everything Pentagram) beautiful and amazing. Modern yet very Harley in every way. Much more content, including many more photos here.
